BIG JOHN & TONTO, Frickley, West Yorkshire 1991.

I came across Ken ‘Tonto’ Booth, seen here on the right, in the record department in WH Smith’s. As I recall he was pulling a Billie Jo Spears album out from the country and western section. When I told him I was photographing a series of portraits of people from the Pontefract area, he agreed to make one in. Tonto had a like-minded friend called Big John (I don’t think he was that big – he might have been stood on a box when I took this shot).

When I arrived at Tonto’s house he said in a very broad Yorkshire accent, “Come in lad, you’ll have to excuse the mess, me squaw f***ed off a couple of weeks ago.”
